Want to win an architecture award? Put a few curves into your design; those straight lines are so boring and someone else will deal with the problem of fitting square bookcases and wardrobes into the bendy walls.
If I sound a little cynical, I shouldn’t be. Frank Gehry’s buildings are a wonderful gift to us photographers and we’ve been lucky enough to see a few of them on our recent travels. So here’s my offering for the Weekly Photo Challenge.
What do you think of his work – genius or gimmick?
WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE: CURVES – bend it like Gehry

I so want to stay in that hotel.
Start saving now! Though there are cheaper options in the area and the Navarra region in northern Spain is well worth spending some time exploring.
Yes, it’s on my small hole bucket list.
Excellent entry! I love his work!
Fine from a distance anyway.
I’m not a great fan but when you see the plans for the development of Barangaroo at Darling Harbour here in Sydney which threatens to make this wonderful location look like a strip of Surfers’ Paradise or maybe the CBD of Dubai, anything by Gehry would be a relief. (Darling Harbour = Dubai Harbour. Maybe that’ll be it’s new nickname.)
Yes, there’ll be more landmark buildings there than you can point an icon at, Duncan.
I feel for the builders.
I suppose the bricklayers sometimes get to sit around for a few weeks, watching the roofing guys scratching their heads as they pore over Mr Gehry’s drawings.
you made me smile with “Want to win an architecture award? Put a few curves into your design…” – my daughter and son in law are architects (and won prizes for architecture)
And were their curvy designs the prize-winning ones, ft? Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright went in the opposite direction of course and still achieved success.
I just LOVE Gehry’s work – the outside of the Guggenheim in Bilbao is far better than the inside IMHO 🙂
Great photos, Richard.
We liked the inside of Bilbao’s Guggenheim too, though I agree the outside is what makes it special.
LOL, love the name! Great challenge choices!
