SATURDAY PHOTO #12 – Mondrian’s House on the Gein

The house on the River Gein, painted by Mondrian

I don’t expect to win any photography prizes for this shot, but I am very interested in the subject.

Piet Mondriaan - Huis aan het Gein

Before he started painting his famous coloured squares, and before he changed the spelling of his name to ‘Mondrian’, Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan and a group of his friends spent time working by the lovely River Gein, just outside Amsterdam, between the villages of Abcoude and Weesp, painting windmills and also a particular house.

It happens to be on one of my favourite bike rides, and I was delighted to learn from Yvonne Louis’s book A Brush With Mondrian that the house is still there.

I commend the book, the Gein and the bike ride to you and I was delighted to find the house there too.

So glad you found it, Richard. Gorgeous spot, very dear to my heart now.
Your photo is fabulous! Great to see the comparison with his painting done more than 100 years ago. From cow-barn then to warm family home now.

  2. And I’m glad you found the post too, Yvonne.

I thought at first I must have missed the house, since I’d ridden well past Abcoude towards the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, but it is still very recognisable from the painting.

That ride along Het Gein really is beautiful, and they’ve even filled in some pot-holes in the road this year.

  3. It is a beautiful photo. I have pottery called Gein. I wonder if it comes from there.

What a lovely site. Even for us Dutch it is really nice to see the pretty spots and nice information about our country/history. But I think this is one of the most beautifull pictures you’ve taken. (geintje)
We are living in this house on the Gein. You’re very welcome to have a cup of coffee next time you’re passing by.

    • Very nice to hear from you, Marion. Yes, Yvonne had told me you lived there and it would be very nice to have a koffie with you next time. (En dat is geen geintje – ik meen het echt!)

I’m very excited that you are all going to meet! Better and better.

I agree. It’s a beautiful scene. No wonder Mondrian was so captured by it. You are making me miss my faviourite spots around Groningen. Ook gister langs Blackwattle Bay heb ik een man van Sydney ontmoeten wie was vroeger getrouwd met een vrouw van Groningen! It is a very small world.

  7. Hello, I think your website might be having browser compatibility issues.

When I look at your blog site in Firefox, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping.

I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, fantastic blog!
